The Providence Midwifery Model of Care: Personalized Care and Collaborative Support
For many expectant parents, choosing a care provider is an important part of the pregnancy and birthing journey. At Providence, we are proud to offer comprehensive midwifery services founded on the midwifery model of care, complemented by the expertise and support of OBGYNs. Together, these approaches offer patients the benefits of both models of care giving expecting mothers personalized, holistic support alongside access to advanced medical expertise when needed.
At the heart of midwifery care is the certified nurse-midwife (CNM), a healthcare professional with extensive training in pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. CNMs support women and their families throughout every stage of the pregnancy and birthing experience while also providing a full range of gynecologic and primary healthcare services.
The midwifery model goes beyond physical health. CNMs take time to educate expectant parents, discuss birthing choices, answer questions, and develop individualized care plans that reflect each patient’s needs and preferences. By focusing on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of well-being, midwifery care can help create an informed, supported, and empowering experience for parents and their support systems.
What makes the Providence midwifery model unique is the way personalized midwifery care is integrated with collaborative OB/GYN support. Midwives remain at the center of your care, providing the time, attention, education, and individualized support that define the midwifery model, while our OB/GYN physicians are available to collaborate when medical expertise or intervention is needed. This collaborative approach allows us to honor your preferences and support your goals while keeping your safety and the well-being of your baby at the forefront throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum.
You Are Seen as a Whole Person:
Midwifery care is centered on the belief that you are more than a patient. You are a whole person with unique needs, experiences, values, and goals. Your CNM takes the time to get to know you, listen to your concerns, understand what matters most to you, and consider your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being throughout your care.
Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, your care is personalized to you. Your CNM will provide education, answer your questions, discuss your options, and partner with you as you make decisions about your health and your pregnancy. This collaborative approach helps you feel informed, respected, and confident in your choices.

From pregnancy through birth and postpartum care, you can expect compassionate support that recognizes the individual behind the medical needs. Our midwifery care is about building a relationship with you, honoring your preferences, and supporting your birth journey.
You Have More Time to Talk, Ask Questions and Be Heard:
Providence midwives understand that pregnancy comes with many questions. Our CNM’s are dedicated to giving you the time and attention you deserve to to get the answers you need. With midwifery care, visits are designed to give you time to talk openly with your CNM, ask questions, and discuss what matters most to you.

Your CNM takes the time to listen to your concerns, explain what to expect, and help you understand your choices. Whether you have questions about your changing body, pregnancy symptoms, labor, birth options, or preparing for life with a new baby, they are here to listen and help guide you.
Your Body Is Respected, Capable, and Designed for Birth:
The midwifery model of care recognizes pregnancy and birth as normal, physiologic processes while also honoring that every pregnancy and birth is unique. Your body has an incredible capacity to support pregnancy and childbirth, and your CNM is there to provide guidance, encouragement, and expert care throughout the process.

Your CNM respects your body, your preferences, your individual circumstances, and your birth goals. They take the time to explain what is happening, discuss your options, and support you in making informed decisions about your care. When appropriate, midwives may encourage movement, positioning, relaxation techniques, and other approaches that can support the physiologic process of labor and birth.
At the same time, supporting physiologic birth does not mean avoiding medical care when it is needed. Sometimes the safest path for a parent or baby may include induction, cesarean birth, medication, monitoring, or another medical intervention. Your CNM will help you understand the reasons for recommendations, discuss available options, and support you through changes in your birth plan.
With OBGYN backup available, Providence midwives have access to additional medical expertise when circumstances call for it. Whether your birth unfolds as you hoped or takes an unexpected path, the goal is the same: to provide safe, compassionate, individualized care and help you feel informed, supported, and empowered throughout your birth experience.
Support for Natural, Low-Intervention Birth: If You Want It:
If you desire a natural, low-intervention birth, your CNM can support you with education, encouragement, movement, breathing techniques, comfort measures, and ongoing support throughout labor and birth.

Most importantly, you are in control of your choices. Midwifery care supports your birth preferences while respecting that plans can change. Whether you choose an unmedicated birth, pain relief, or medical interventions when needed, your midwife is there to provide information, support, and compassionate care.
